Stores That Close Every Sunday

A handful of chains consistently close on Sundays. The most notable is Chick-fil-A, which has never opened on a Sunday since founder Truett Cathy established the policy in 1946. It's become such a defining part of the brand that customers plan around it - and competitors like Popeyes have actually benefited from increased Sunday traffic as a result.

Financial institutions - banks and credit unions - also close on Sundays, following banking regulations and industry conventions that date back over a century. How Sunday Hours Differ by Category

Not all retail categories handle Sundays the same way. Grocery stores and pharmacies barely change their schedules, while department stores and specialty retailers cut hours significantly. Here's how each category typically adjusts on Sundays.

Grocery Stores: Mostly Normal

Grocery chains are among the most consistent Sunday operators. Kroger, Walmart, Publix, Safeway, and Whole Foods all open on Sundays with only minor hour reductions. The main difference is that the pharmacy counter within the store may have slightly reduced hours (opening at 10:00 AM instead of 8:00 AM), even when the front of the store is open for regular shopping.

Department Stores: Later Open, Earlier Close

• Bergen County, New Jersey - Still bans most retail sales on Sundays. Malls like Paramus Park and Garden State Plaza sit empty while their counterparts across the county line are packed. Grocery stores and pharmacies are exempt.
• Car dealerships - Multiple states including Texas, Colorado, and Minnesota prohibit automobile sales on one weekend day, usually Sunday. You can browse the lot, but you can't close a deal.

Why Some Chains Stay Closed on Sundays

The chains that close on Sundays generally do so for one of three reasons: faith-based policies, regulatory requirements, or simple economics.

Chick-fil-A's Sunday closure is the most high-profile example of a faith-based policy. Founder Truett Cathy believed employees deserved a day of rest, and that policy has remained in place as the chain grew to over 3,000 locations. It reportedly costs the company an estimated $1-2 billion in annual revenue, but the brand loyalty it generates may be worth even more.

Banks and credit unions follow a different logic. Federal banking regulations historically centered around weekday business hours, and while Saturday hours have become standard at many branches, Sunday operation remains rare. The cost of staffing a branch on Sunday rarely justifies the number of transactions that would occur, especially as mobile banking handles most routine needs.

The Post Office follows federal government operating schedules, though USPS has increasingly offered self-service options at locations with automated kiosks that function seven days a week.
