The Fourth of July is a holiday where most retail stores stay open because consumer demand stays high. People need charcoal, hot dogs, ice, drinks, sunscreen, flags, and fireworks - and stores are happy to provide.

Grocery stores are reliably open on Independence Day. This is actually one of the bigger summer shopping days, right up there with Memorial Day weekend. Stores may open a bit later or close a bit earlier than usual, but you can count on being able to buy food and supplies for your cookout. The busiest hours at grocery stores on July 4th are typically 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, so get there early if you want to avoid crowds.

Home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowe's stay open on the Fourth. If you need a last-minute grill, patio furniture, or outdoor supplies, they will be there for you. Hardware stores like Ace may have reduced hours since they are independently owned.

Department stores are open but often with reduced hours. This is not a major shopping day for clothing and household goods - most people are at barbecues and fireworks displays rather than shopping for clothes. Electronics stores follow a similar pattern: open but quiet.

Restaurants do well on July 4th and the vast majority stay open. Casual dining and fast food are especially busy. Many restaurants run Fourth of July specials, and bars and restaurants with outdoor seating or patios are typically packed.

Office supply stores, banks, and government services close on Independence Day. The post office does not deliver mail. If you need to handle any business errands, do them on July 3rd.
