Veterans Day Store Hours Guide

Veterans Day on November 11th is a federal holiday that honors military veterans. While government offices and banks close, the retail world stays open - and many businesses offer special discounts and promotions specifically for veterans and active-duty military members.

All major categories of retail stores operate normally on Veterans Day. Grocery stores, department stores, electronics retailers, home improvement stores, pharmacies, auto parts stores, discount retailers, and specialty stores all keep their regular hours. This is not a day that disrupts shopping in any meaningful way.

What makes Veterans Day notable for shoppers is the widespread offering of military discounts and freebies. Dozens of restaurant chains offer free meals or discounted dining for veterans and active military on November 11th. National chains that commonly participate include Applebee's, Chili's, Olive Garden, IHOP, Denny's, Red Robin, and many others. Most require proof of military service such as a military ID, VA card, or discharge papers.

Retailers also get in on Veterans Day promotions. Home Depot and Lowe's offer military discounts year-round but often enhance them around Veterans Day. Clothing stores, sporting goods retailers, and outdoor recreation companies frequently run military appreciation sales. Some stores extend their military discounts to all customers for Veterans Day weekend.

The usual federal holiday closures apply: banks, post offices, government offices, and schools may close. Stock markets are closed. But the rest of commerce operates normally.

Veterans Day's position in early-to-mid November also means it often overlaps with early holiday shopping season, so you may find Veterans Day sales blending with pre-Black Friday promotions at some retailers.
