New Year's Eve is surprisingly close to a normal shopping day for most retailers. Unlike Christmas Eve, which triggers widespread early closures, December 31st sees most stores operating on regular or near-regular schedules.

Grocery stores are open and often busier than a typical day as people stock up for New Year's Eve parties. Expect strong demand for appetizer ingredients, champagne, beer, wine, and party supplies. Most grocery stores keep their regular hours on New Year's Eve, though some may close an hour or two early.

Department stores and electronics retailers operate normally on December 31st. Post-Christmas return traffic is still flowing, and after-Christmas clearance sales are in full swing. This is actually a decent shopping day if you want to take advantage of holiday markdowns without fighting the December 26th crowds.

Restaurants are a special case on New Year's Eve. Pharmacies stay open with regular schedules. Home improvement stores and auto parts stores operate normally. Most retailers understand that New Year's Eve is a regular workday for commerce - the celebration is in the evening, so daytime shopping proceeds as usual.

The only consistent closures on New Year's Eve are government offices and banks, which may close early. Stock exchanges close early as well. Everything retail-facing stays open through the day.
