Christmas Day Store Hours Guide

Christmas Day is the single most common closure day across all of American retail. If there is one day a year when you can count on stores being closed, it is December 25th. Even stores that stay open on Thanksgiving, Easter, and every other holiday will close on Christmas Day.

The closures are nearly universal across every category. Grocery stores, department stores, electronics retailers, home improvement chains, office supply stores, specialty shops - all closed. This applies to major chains and most independent retailers alike. Shopping malls close entirely, taking all their tenant stores with them.

The few exceptions are worth knowing about. Some pharmacies - particularly CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid - keep a limited number of locations open on Christmas Day, typically with shortened hours from around 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. These are usually the 24-hour locations or stores in high-traffic areas. If you have an urgent prescription need, check the pharmacy chain's website to find which specific locations will be staffed.

Convenience stores are the other category that sometimes stays open. 7-Eleven, being franchise-operated, has many locations that remain open 24/7 including Christmas Day. Gas station convenience stores may also keep their doors open, though staffing can be minimal.

If you are planning ahead, do all your essential shopping by December 24th. Christmas Eve hours are also heavily reduced at most stores - expect closings between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM on December 24th. Stock up on groceries, fill prescriptions, and handle any last-minute returns before the holiday shutdown begins.
