Christmas Day is the single most common closure day across all of American retail. If there is one day a year when you can count on stores being closed, it is December 25th. Even stores that stay open on Thanksgiving, Easter, and every other holiday will close on Christmas Day.

The closures are nearly universal across every category. Grocery stores, department stores, electronics retailers, home improvement chains, office supply stores, specialty shops - all closed. This applies to major chains and most independent retailers alike. Shopping malls close entirely, taking all their tenant stores with them.

The few exceptions are worth knowing about. Some pharmacies - particularly CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid - keep a limited number of locations open on Christmas Day, typically with shortened hours from around 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
